What do you guys think would be the optimal settings to get something that
looks like a dull pewter, the diffused metallic greyish that you see on
1950s SF rockets? I can't quite get that effect using LW yet. It comes
out looking too smooth and uniform.

Try varying the bump map in the brushed metal surface. Probably turn down
the Texture Amplitude, and maybe vary one of the texture size parameters to
make it softer. It's a bit too heavily figured for what you want.
